WHERE IS THE SUNSHINE BOX MADE?
My Sunshine Box® is a product designed and built in Calgary, Alberta Canada. A few of the component parts are sourced from other countries in North America, Europe and Asia. These components have all been thoroughly tested to rigorous standards and are included in the manufacturer’s warranty.
SHOULD I TAKE MY SOLAR PANEL OUT OF THE SUNSHINE BOX TO CHARGE IT?
YES! If you leave the solar panel in the lid of your Sunshine Box and charge it with the box open, the sun’s extreme heat may damage the plastic and even weaken the battery over time. We recommend that you always remove the panel from the box for charging. Please fix the panel on a pole or on a flat surface that is positioned to receive as much solar exposure as possible for the longest period of the day. The charge indicator on the Sunshine Box will flash rapidly when the solar panel is charging at peak efficiency. If the flashing slows down, then the sunshine may be obscured or the panel may be dirty (cloud and inadequate sunlight will affect your charging time as well).
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CHARGE MY SUNSHINE BOX?
The Sunshine Box has state of the art power management software. It is very important that the solar panel has an unobstructed exposure to direct sunlight. With full sunlight, the battery should charge in 6-8 hours. If the sun is obscured by clouds, the battery may need a full 12 hours or in some rare occasions might not fully charge. To charge the battery as quickly as possible, limit your use of the Sunshine Box while it is charging. The charge indicator light will flash faster when the panel is getting maximum sunlight. When the battery is fully charged, the charge indicator light will stay on (as long as the solar panel is connected). You cannot harm the battery by leaving the solar panel connected with the battery fully charged.
HOW LONG WILL MY BATTERY LAST?
With proper battery care, the 7.2 amp/hour SLA battery(s) provided with the Sunshine Box may last 3-5 years. When a new battery is required simply contact your local or national distributor and a new battery can be supplied. Sunshine Global makes every effort to comply with local environmental legislation and actively seeks to recycle used batteries in the best way available.
SHOULD I RUN MY BATTERY RIGHT DOWN BEFORE I RECHARGE IT?
The charge controller on the Sunshine Box is designed so that the battery cannot be damaged by over use or by being overcharged. The system is designed to automatically manage the battery’s power and charging functions at their best levels.
WHY IS THERE A SWITCH FOR THE 12 VOLT AND USB (5V) OUTLETS?
Power will slowly leak out of these outlets even though nothing may be plugged into them when power is being sent to those outlets. The Sunshine Box is designed to save battery power by allowing you to shut them off when not in use. We suggest also that lamps be unplugged when not in use for long periods of time.
HOW MANY LIGHTS CAN I PUT ON A STRING? (IN SERIES)
On a single battery, we suggest no more than 2 LED lights on each outlet. If you run more than 2 lights in a series, the entire row of lights will dim. The Sunshine Box SB1 model will run 4 lights comfortably for many hours on a single full charge. A second set of lights can be purchased through your distributor.
IS THE SUNSHINE BOX WATERPROOF?
The Sunshine Box has been designed with rubber gaskets and a hardy plastic case so that it is weather resistant. In addition, the control panel is a weather-resistant membrane switch design. The Sunshine Box is NOT, however, water-proof. Other than the solar panel, we recommend that the box and lamps not be left out in the rain. Under no conditions should any part of the Sunshine Box be submerged in water.
CAN THE SUNSHINE BOX RUN MY TELEVISION?
Any TV equipped to run on DC power should work with the Sunshine Box. Some TVs are too large for the Box’s capacity so we recommend a smaller TV. Energy efficient LCD TVs do work very well with the Sunshine Box and it is recommended that those TVs be used with the SB1 and SB2 units. Televisions or accessories that run from household power (240V) will not run on the Sunshine Box.
CAN THE SUNSHINE BOX RUN MY COMPUTER?
With the proper 12volt adaptor you can recharge a laptop battery with your Sunshine Box. If the computer is a desk top PC, meaning that it runs from household (AC) power, it will require more electrical energy than the SB1 was designed to provide. Laptop computers have a 19 volt rechargeable battery and can be run on 12V and some on 5V USB power. At present, the SB2 with 2 panels (10W each) and 2 batteries will run a small EEE portable computer with a 7” or 9” LCD screen for approximately 4 hours from a fully charged Sunshine Box. Unfortunately, there is no consistent international standard for power consumption for laptops. The newest processors and display screens are becoming very power efficient (as low as 20W consumption). Many of the batteries in these efficient laptop computers will charge from the SB1 and SB2 models over a short period of time.
CAN I PLUG A LARGER PANEL INTO THE SUNSHINE BOX?
We recommend that you only use the solar panel supplied with the system. The electronics of the SB1 and SB2 models can take up to 20 watts of solar power to charge the battery. Any damage caused by manipulating the system will not be covered by the warranty.
WHAT IF SOMETHING BREAKS ON THE SUNSHINE BOX?
If a part happens to break during the warranty period, or afterwards, please contact us at info@mysunshinebox.com or your sales associate to find out if there is a service center nearby. It may be necessary to send the parts for repair or replacement in some cases. Parts are designed to be modular and are easily replaced, usually with only a screwdriver.
WHAT IF I WANT TO ADD LIGHTS TO MY SUNSHINE BOX?

WHY ARE MY LIGHTS NOT VERY BRIGHT AT TIMES?
The Sunshine Box light switch is designed to dim and brighten the lights gradually. When turning on the lights, hold the switch on until it reaches maximum brightness. If you then release the switch and press it in again and hold it, the light will gradually dim until it turns off. If the battery has not been fully charged, it will affect the quality of the lights, and the lights will be dim if more than two lights are being run in series.
Please note, the LED lights made by CCI are ultra-efficient 1- watt lights. These emit a high-quality light through the use of a special magnifier and are designed to run for hours with minimal energy consumption. They will not emit the same light as a traditional 60W light bulb that uses AC power. The LED lights are meant to replace kerosene and paraffin lighting and are far superior to those light sources.
